Getting our Geek On, Game of Thrones Style (Spoiler-free)

Dubrovnik.

The old town from up high.
The old town from up high.

Probably the most well-known attraction in Croatia, now made even more famous by being used to film Game of Thrones. And not just Game of Thrones; the next Star Wars movie has been shot there, as well as a Bollywood movie and Korean TV shows. Add in all the cruise ships and the place gets pretty packed. But it’s not too bad as long as you try to do your main sightseeing early in the morning or later in the afternoon, otherwise it’s a bit of a zoo.

Pile Gate, the main entrance to the old town.
Pile Gate, the main entrance to the old town. It was probably 8:30 when I took this, proof that you can get photos without tourist hordes.
I got up early one morning to take a picture of the main street without the huge crowds, and instead it was full of trucks and vans.
But it doesn’t always go to plan, like when I tried to take a picture of the main street without the huge crowds, and instead it was full of trucks and vans doing the morning rounds.

Based on the title of this post I’m sure you know now that we’re big fans of Game of Thrones and so of course we went on one of the Game of Thrones walking tours where they take you to the different locations used in the show.

The location of Qarth.

Fort Lovrijenac a.k.a. the Red Keep.

So the tour was a lot of fun and our guide even told us some stories like when they did the crowd scenes for the Walk of Shame, some of the Croatian extras were yelling anti-government stuff which made it into the final cut.

After our tour we also went walking along the top of all the walls which are pretty damn impressive. I’m sure plenty of armies marched up to the walls, saw how big they were, then thought: ‘stuff this, we’ll go conquer someone else’.

We also had another crack at proper exercise while we were in Dubrovnik and went kayaking around the old town and the nearby island of Lokrum, a total of 7.5km. There were currents we had to paddle against so it was a proper workout. Pedr thought his arms were going to fall off as we reached the furthest point around the island, but luckily we had the current with us on the way back so we didn’t need to ask our guide for a tow. I thought I was OK until later that night when my arms went all tingly and painful and kept me up all night. So, another exercise fail.

Next up will be Montenegro and Bosnia & Herzegovina, a mix of natural beauty and old towns.
