Spain is Supposed to be Sunny, Right?

Ahh Sunny Spain, where are you? It’s been two weeks and I think we’ve only had 2 fully sunny days in that time, all the rest seem to be overcast. That’s why most of the photos are grey and cloudy.

We’ve spent the better part of the week staying with Marlene, a good friend of Pedr’s parents, and she’s done a great job showing us all the local sights in the Benidorm area.

Benidorm, the Gold Coast of Spain.

For those who don’t know, Benidorm has a bit of a reputation for being a crazy resort town full of ugly high rise apartments, but luckily it has a bunch of beautiful old towns nearby that we wouldn’t have been able to find without Marlene’s help. Polop and Guadalest are both perched up high on rocky crags surrounded by mountains, just like what you’d imagine a stereotypical old Spanish town would look like.

And you have pretty old towns and churches on the coast like Altea.

But if you do want to party hard Benidorm-style then come down in the winter months when all the retirees from cold countries come down to escape and party the way they do: Limo Scooters and poppers/juice boxes of wine!

We even saw one old woman in a big fur coat chaining up her scooter to another one outside a dance club so that no one would nick it. We reckon that in the time we’ve been wandering around Benidorm there is a MUCH higher percentage of scooters than in Las Vegas. And not all from old people either.

We eventually did get a really nice sunny day when we went to Alicante and climbed up to the top of the castle. It’s 166m up on top of a bloody big cliff, which is approximately equal to 55 flights of stairs for those of you playing at home with fitbits.

So here’s a couple of before and after shots of the climb just to prove that we did it.

We had a really great time in the Benidorm area and we’re glad we got to have such a great host like Marlene look after us as well as all of her dogs and cat. I even got one of them to help me out:

So the next stop is Granada and the towns of Andalucia for some Moorish action!

Glad you had a great time with Marlene. She really did look after you. Can’t remember seeing Guadalest when we were there. I will put it on our wish list!
    Enjoying the blogs and photos.
